VEGETARIAN, VEGAN OR FRUITARIAN IN CHIANG MAI?

Vegan, Vegetarian or Fruitarian?

It is easy to be vegan in Chiang Mai!

If you are vegan or vegetarian and you are coming to visit or stay or even live in Chiang Mai, short-term or long-term, then you will not be going hungry. Rather, you are blessed with the fact that around every corner there is a place to discover that has plenty of options for you, if not ONLY vegetarian options. I have built this impartial restaurant review site to help guide you.

I list restaurants that are vegan, vegetarian and also restaurants that cater well to vegetarians perhaps with a separate vegetarian menu. I clearly list which of these categories the restaurant falls in to. I know that it is safer to eat somewhere that is strictly vegetarian or vegan but restaurants that clearly advertise vegetarian options in my experience has never caused me a problem and will also be more convenient if you are dining with meat-eating friends.

The restaurants I have listed are purposefully not in order of favourites, although I may have mentioned some of my personal preferences in some of the reviews. I believe that everyone has different needs and preferences and I want you to find out for yourself as your own opinion is going to be different from mine. It may take a little longer to find what you want by going through the site, but it will save you going to one of my favourites that doesn't turn out to be yours. :)

As well as Chiang Mai, I have also listed other restaurants around Thailand that I have experience with. Please visit those pages if you need help in other provinces. I hope that you will find this site useful as you can enjoy healthy and ethical food in Chiang Mai preserving your health and the lives and welfare of animals.

Thai / Foreigner Style

Note the differences between restaurants that are Thai style and foreigner style. In a Thai style one they open early at about 07:30 AM and most of the food will start to go after lunch, most will be closed at around 3:00 PM. The food will already be cooked and laid out in trays, you point to what you want. It won't be that hot, so you might prefer to take it home and re-heat it. They often use soy protein texture as a meat substitute, although not in all dishes. This is something I don't actually see as often as what I used to. The food can also have a tendency to be quite oily. The food here is jey so is completely vegan.

Thai style ones are extremely cheap, dishes are typically around 20 baht each. Foreigner style restaurants not as cheap, but tend to be cheaper than normal restaurants.

Some of the Thai style restaurants are better than others and I have found some very good ones. I have covered them in this site.  Most of them will simply have the generic name of which translates to 'Vegan Food for Health', although some will have a name as well. You will never find alcohol at the Thai restaurants since the jey diet in Thailand does not allow alcohol. In fact, they do not usually have anything much else to offer at all to drink except self service free water.

Only a little English will be spoken.

The restaurants that cater for foreigners are no different from other restaurants except that they often close earlier at perhaps 8:00 or 9:00 PM and I haven't found any later than 10:00 PM. They sometimes do not serve alcohol.
