The Whole Earth advertises itself as a vegetarian restaurant but it is not entirely vegetarian. They do also serve optional chicken and fish in their dishes. They are famous for the vegetarian food that they serve.

The Whole Earth is in an expensive part of down near just near the night bazaar which is renowned for higher prices and it is next to a pretty swanky hotel, so be prepared to pay a bit more than you usually would in Chiang Mai for vegetarian food. However, the food they serve is excellent so I do not mind paying a bit more than normal.
I think what you are really paying for here is the venue. Unlike most vegetarian places that tend to be quite basic in terms of decor, The Whole Earth is really rather posh. The waiters wear uniforms and will greet you on arrival to seat you. There is the inside house area or the outside garden house area. Very tranquil setting. It is always busy with a lot of tourists and foriegners and we advise you to book especially if it is a day of significance. This said, I have never had to wait for a table.
This is the sort of place you'll want to go if you want to make a night out of your experience. They serve alcohol and they are open a little later than usual at 10.00 PM. You might want to pick here for a special occasion. Be prepared to get your cash out but I think the food and the experience both justify the price.
